AFS-UW Officer Elections
The American Fisheries Society is seeking nominations for officer positions for 2017-2018, and we need your help!
The American Fisheries Society at the University of Washington works to connect undergraduate and graduate students with each other as well as with Washington-BC and the Western Division Chapters of AFS. We aim to provide networking opportunities with local professional researchers at our events.
Becoming a member of the executive committee is a great way to get more involved in the SAFS community in addition to networking with people in the field. Both undergraduates and graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply. Any nominees should be willing to invest adequate time toward the committee. Open positions are President, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications, and Membership/Outreach.
If you would like to nominate anyone, including yourself, or if you have questions, please contact either Grace Workman (grace1rw@uw.edu) or Amaryllis Adey (aadey@uw.edu).
Please submit nominations by May 1st to afsuw@uw.edu as elections will be held mid-May!
Movie Screening
Freshwaters Illustrated and the University of Washington chapter of the American Fisheries Society are proud to announce a pre-release screening of the documentary “UPRIVER” on January 18th.
Description of the Film:
“UPRIVER is a ‘watershed film’ that explores one of the Nation’s most active river conservation movements. Within Oregon’s Willametter River system, the film focuses on people from all walks of life who are coming together to revive the health of this large river and the life it supports”
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Fish 102
Cost: Free, but we greatly appreciate donations to support AFS-UW. Donate $10 to receive an awesome pint glass.

Next Career Development Seminar – May 20th with Jodie Toft!
The next AFS UW Career Development Seminar will be with Dr. Jodie Toft from the Nature Conservancy on May 20th at 10 am in FSH 203. Here is a quick bio about Jodie:
Jodie Toft is the Senior Marine Ecologist for The Nature Conservancy in Washington. She provides science capacity and strategic thinking on a variety of projects on the Washington Coast and in Puget Sound including gear-innovation research with fishermen, coastal and marine spatial planning, and multiple benefit assessment across the land-sea interface. Prior to joining The Nature Conservancy, Jodie spent four years at the Natural Capital Project. There she specialized in development and application of spatially-explicit models to quantify how ecosystem services linked to fish and shellfish change in response to different management regimes and potential impacts of climate change. Jodie received her doctoral degree from the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington and her bachelor’s degree in biology and public policy analysis from Pomona College in California.
2 Exciting AFS UW events!
1. On February 24th at 1 pm in FSH 213 we will have our next Career Development Seminar with guest speaker Noble Hendrix!
Noble Hendrix has more than 17 years of experience as a quantitative ecologist and biometrician. He has worked in estuarine, marine, and aquatic habitats on invertebrates, fish, and marine mammals across the southeastern and northwestern U.S. Noble has experience with a large variety of ecological and fishery data, and has the ability to construct statistical models in a probabilistic framework. He has also worked with Bayesian methods and typically uses them to incorporate uncertainty into biological and statistical models.
2. AFS UW TRIVIA NIGHT! February 26th @ 6:30 in the FSH lobby! Eat pizza, drink beer (21+) and answer marine and fresh water trivia questions and win prizes! Once again this event will be hosted by the wonderful Adam Hansen

2015 WA-BC AFS chapter annual general meeting (AGM) TRAVEL FUNDING!
Below is the application for student travel scholarships to the 2015 WA-BC AFS chapter annual general meeting (AGM). The meeting will be held in Richmond, BC February 16-19, 2015. More information can be found at the chapter website (http://wabc-afs.org/) and meeting website (http://agm2015.wabc-afs.org/). The meeting theme is “Communications and Modern Tools for Research & Management” and the current symposia are:
– Endangered Species Act/ Species at Risk Act
– Upper Columbia River Redband Trout
– Pink and Chum Salmon Workshop
– Science Communication
– Cutthroat Trout
– Ecology of Juvenile Salmon in the Nearshore
– Fish Culture
– TBA — feel free to submit your own symposia! They are still accepting symposia post-deadline.
The WA-BC AFS chapter is providing this scholarship to award students up to $500 to help cover registration, travel, and lodging costs to attend the meeting. Registration costs can also be waived if a student volunteers at the meeting (more information to come – but worth it to mention your interest in volunteering on your scholarship application). Applications are due Jan 16.
